Blue Spruce The Blue Spruce Award™ is a provincial primary reading program which brings recently published Canadian children's picture books to Ontario children ages 4 to 8 in kindergarten through to grade three. For many children, this is their first introduction to the world of books; it is a very exciting time for everyone.
The goals of the Blue Spruce Award™ program are:
* to promote reading for enjoyment and information among primary students |
* to make students aware of quality Canadian picture books including Canadian authors and illustrators |
* to develop the student's skill in evaluating a picture book based on story, text and pictures |
* to provide opportunities for students to discuss the picture books in an authentic manner |
Silver Birch The Silver Birch Awards™ are given by Grade 4, 5 and 6 students in a spectacular ceremony held annually in May before fifteen hundred of their peers. The children choose winners in Fiction and Non-Fiction when they cast their ballots on the province-wide Voting Day earlier in the same month. It is the most democratic and unbiased process possible when the children make their choice. The program is administered by the
Ontario Library Association and run by teacher-librarians and teachers in schools and by children's librarians in public libraries. But the choice belongs to the children. And, in their tens of thousands, they know what they are doing. Silver Birch Express The Red Maple Award™ reading program is offered for the enjoyment of students in Grades 7 and 8. The program, like the Association's Silver Birch Awards™ reading
program, gives students who have read a minimum number of nominated titles the opportunity to vote with a large group of their peers for the nominated title that they feel should win the Red Maple Award™ each year. Students are encouraged to view the information about authors and the books on a special web site created for registrants. The site includes e-mail access to most of the authors and a bulletin board through which students may share their thoughts on the books. Voting for most registrants is also electronic. This is part of the philosophy of OLA organizers that each reading program should offer a unique face so that no one program undermines the effectiveness of another.
Voting for the Nominees will take place in April, 2006
